SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone is hosting a ‘Future for Business in Europe’ event in Cookstown next month.
The event will take place at the Glenavon Hotel on Friday October 6 from 10am to 12.30pm.
Among the speakers will be Irish Government Minister of State for European Affairs Peter Burke TD, Manufacturing NI Chief Executive Stephen Kelly, Intertrade Ireland Chief Executive Margaret Hearty, John Thompson & Sons Ltd CEO Declan Billington and SDLP South Belfast MP Claire Hanna.
SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone said, “It has been a turbulent few years for industries across these islands with uncertainty around our relationship with Europe making it impossible for businesses to plan properly for the future. We are proud in this area of the thriving industry that has weathered that uncertainty and now stands ready to make the most of dual market access.
“I have organised this event to bring together local businesses, sector leaders and government representatives to showcase the strength of local industry in this area and to discuss how we can work together going forward to strengthen our all-island economy and to make sure that local industry has the support it needs. Dual market access has the potential be transformative for Mid Ulster and the North as a whole and the SDLP is committed to ensuring this opportunity isn’t wasted.”
Minister of State for European Affairs Peter Burke TD said, “I’m delighted to be attending this important event as we examine how we can work together both on our island and across Europe to create opportunities for businesses. Mid Ulster is home to some fantastic companies, with key players in the agri-food and manufacturing industries and I’m looking forward to engaging with local business leaders to understand how they have been coping with changing relationships both locally and further afield.
“The manufacturing and agri-food industries are huge contributors to the economy right across our island, sustaining thousands of jobs, attracting investment and supporting local communities. It’s important that we make the most of opportunities to come together and learn from each other so that we can see these industries continue to succeed in future.”
