AQW 6707/22-27 – Identity and Language (Northern Ireland) Act 2022

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Justice what steps have been taken by her Department to give effect to the provisions in The Identity and Language (Northern Ireland) Act 2022.

Minister of Justice: Commencement of provisions within The Identity and Language Act (NI) 2022 is a matter for the Northern Ireland Office.

The Department of Justice has taken a number of steps to support individuals who wish to engage with the Department in Irish or Ulster Scots. For example, arrangements are in place to deal with correspondence received in any language and documents can be made available in alternative languages on request.

My Department has also adopted a tri-lingual logo which is used on official documents, Departmental headed paper, advertisements and digital platforms.

A senior official from my Department is also a member of a Cross-Departmental Working Group that is chaired by an official within the Department for Communities and which was established to support the development of an Irish Language Strategy and an Ulster-Scots Language, Heritage and Culture Strategy.
