Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Communities for his assessment of the (i) opportunities; and (ii) challenges for his Department in relation to the development of Artificial Intelligence.
Minister for Communities: (i) The adoption and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within my Department offers opportunities to examine how processes and procedures could be improved to drive efficiencies and effectiveness.
My Department relies upon the Department for Work and Pensions in Great Britain and the Department of Finance in Northern Ireland for the vast majority of its digital infrastructure and systems. My Department will be working closely with both on shared opportunities that may arise.
(ii)The challenges faced within my Department include having appropriate governance in place, ensuring cyber and data security, changing business processes, securing the resources required to invest in the development of solutions and the risks of unreliable or inaccurate outcome from artificial intelligence.
All civil servants and those working in government organisations should follow the Generative AI Framework provided by Cabinet Office, which contains detailed guidance on using generative AI safely and securely.
