AQW 20342/22-27 – Justice Department Artificial Intelligence opportunities and risks

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Justice, pursuant to AQW 12373/22-27, to detail any cooperation that has taken place with (i) criminal justice organisations; and (ii) organised crime task forces internationally, to identify (a) opportunities; and (b) risks with Artificial Intelligence.

Minister of Justice: (i)(a) The new Themis contract in NI Courts and Tribunals Service is one example of where co-operation is underway to consider if AI might be used to increase automation of processes and validation of data between Criminal Justice Organisations as part of a range of digital opportunities. Also, in the current discussions around the procurement of a replacement Causeway contract, consideration is being given to how AI might aid the analysis of data between the CJO’s in the future.

(b) The Department has adopted a NICS policy on the use of AI, this follows an internal approval process to ensure that the risks are fully considered before AI is implemented and that if required appropriate safeguards are in place.

(ii) There has been no engagement through the Organised Crime Task Force on AI internationally.
