AQW 30930/22-27 – Road Safety Advertising Campaign for Schools

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Education to detail any plans in place for a new advertising campaign for schools on road safety.

Minister of Education: Road safety advertising campaigns are the responsibility of the Minister for Infrastructure and I fully support the new campaign ‘Roadwise Up’ which aims to raise motorists’ awareness of the risks that children face when boarding and alighting buses.

The safety of children travelling to school is of utmost importance and I met with the Minister for Infrastructure and the Education Authority recently about this issue. We agreed that our officials would collaborate closely to ascertain if enhanced messaging or additional resources can be developed to raise awareness and promote bus safety for school pupils.

My department is represented on the Department for Infrastructure led Road Safety Strategic Forum, which brings together members from relevant departments and organisations to focus on matters directly impacting Northern Ireland’s road safety targets. This forum provides a mechanism through which the Department of Education and the Education Authority can contribute to the development of measures to improve road safety for children and young people.
