SDLP Irish Language Spokesperson Patsy McGlone MLA has welcomed the growth of the Scoil Spreagtha scheme.
The group has announced recruitment plans as part of its growth and development in 2026.
Mr McGlone helped Irish language organisation Gael Linn secure funding to continue the scheme which provides Irish language teaching in schools across the North.
Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone said, “We could have been facing a situation heading towards the end of the year where the Scoil Spreagtha scheme was coming to an end after delivering Irish lessons to thousands of children in schools across the North.
“Instead, I’m delighted to see that the scheme has announced plans to grow and develop in the new year, alongside the recruitment of staff. It was important that this vital Irish language resource was not lost and by working with Gael Linn to engage with the Minister and the Department of Education we were able to secure funding for at least another year.
“Schools and pupils involved in the Scoil Spreagtha scheme have consistently highlighted the wide-ranging benefits – not just in developing Irish language skills, but in boosting overall educational outcomes. This scheme has shown how learning through Irish can inspire curiosity, confidence, and creativity in young people. I sincerely hope Scoil Spreagtha continues for many years to come, helping future generations experience the joy and value of learning through the Irish language.”
