McGlone Highlights Rural Roads in Need of Repair

SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone, has highlighted the poor condition of a number of rural roads in the constituency. The Mid Ulster MLA has written to the Divisional Manager at Infrastructure NI to report problems on the Killybearn Road, Mullan Road, Killycolpy Road and Sunnyside Road. The move follows the recent announcement that £75 million is to be made available for the 2018/19 starting budget for roads structural maintenance.

Mr McGlone said, “I welcomed the recent announcement that £75 million is to be made available for the 2018/19 starting budget for roads structural maintenance.

“However, it is vital that this funding is properly directed to address the years of under-investment and neglect of our rural roads.

“I have taken the opportunity to highlight a number of local roads that are in a very poor condition and are littered with potholes. The Killybearn Road, Mullan Road, Killycolpy Road and Sunnyside Road have all deteriorated markedly in recent months.

“I have asked Infrastructure NI for these roads to be inspected for remedial work as a matter of urgency.

“I have also sought more details on how the agency will use the recently allocated money from the Department to carry out the necessary repairs to local roads.

“The rural roads network is an important lifeline for local communities and is essential for the success of our rural economy.

“The SDLP will continue to lobby on behalf of our constituents to ensure that the rural roads network is maintained to the highest possible standard.”
