McGlone presses Minister for Animal Cruelty Register

SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has submitted an Assembly question to Justice Minister, Naomi Long, asking for an update on the introduction of an Animal Cruelty Register.

The Mid Ulster MLA said, “In spite of legislation to punish offenders, there is no central register of those convicted of animal cruelty offences. Having one would help prevent further animals being placed in the care of convicted animal abusers.

“Those responsible for heinous crimes against helpless animals should face the full force of the law. However, I am concerned that with no central register, we are left in a situation where animals are inadvertently rehomed or sold to banned individuals, increasing the risk of serial offending.

“I hope that the Minister will confirm in her reply to me that there has been some progress made on the introduction of an Animal Cruelty Register and that this register will operate on an all Island basis, to ensure maximum protections for animals across the island.”
