McGlone: people with disabilities should not be disadvantaged in the new normal

SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has written to the First and deputy First Minister asking what measures have been taken to ensure that people with sight loss or other disabilities are not disadvantaged, as we recover from COVID-19.

The Mid Ulster MLA commented, “As we enter the recovery phase, it is crucial that citizens with disabilities are not disadvantaged in the new normal. A number of measures will need to be taken by Government Departments, local Councils and other agencies to adjust, but it is essential that due consideration is given to the impact of these changes of people with disabilities.

“I have written to the First and deputy First Minister asking them to clarify what guidance has been provided to public bodies and what measures have been taken to ensure people with disabilities are not left behind. I will also be seeking clarity on the level of engagement with the community and voluntary sector.

“Changes to the built environment and the way we do business is understandable and necessary as we adjust to the new normal, but the Executive must take every necessary action to ensure these changes do not unfairly impact on people with disabilities.”
