McGlone Calls on Minister to Support Special Education Sector

SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone, has called on the Minister to provide extra resources to special education schools to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. The Mid Ulster MLA questioned the Education Minister on the level of support provided by his Department during the Assembly ad hoc meeting last week.

Mr McGlone said, “The special education schools provide education and support for the most vulnerable of our society.

“Representatives of those schools have contacted me with their concerns about the level of support provided by the Department to help them cope with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I raised those concerns with the Education Minister during the Assembly sitting last week.

“It is important that the Minister does not neglect other vital areas of education while focussing on the sector that accommodates the majority of pupils.

“The Minister gave an assurance that extra resources would be provided if needed.

“From the contact I have had with the sector those resources are needed now and I will continue to call on the Minister to deliver them.

“The teachers and staff at these schools want to continue to be able to provide a safe place to educate their pupils.

“It is the responsibility of the Education Minister to enable them to do so.”
