Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Education how he plans to support the transfer of children from primary to post-primary schools in the 2021/22 school year.
Minister of Education: In order to support the transfer process and to ensure that parental preference for school sectors is maximised, I have already approved the allocation of an additional 361 Year 8 places for September 2021 admission. My Department will approve additional Year 8 places through the Temporary Variation process where they are required.
Furthermore, for the first time this year, parents of children applying to post-primary education have been able to apply online. Applications close tomorrow and parents will be notified of the outcome of their child’s application in June.
My Department will continue to work closely with the Education Authority to ensure the placement of children during the admissions process is maximised and that parents of children who wish to appeal a school admission decision are able to do so in advance of the 2021/22 school year.
