AQW 27658/17-22 – Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Communities what legal requirements exist for all social rented dwellings to be fitted with (i) smoke alarms; and (ii) carbon monoxide alarms.

Minister for Communities: Currently there is no legal requirement for social rented dwellings to be fitted with smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

In the absence of legislation and in line with Building Regulations the Housing Executive has installed mains operated smoke detectors in its properties as part of its works programme and has installed carbon monoxide detectors in every property where a combustion appliance (gas boiler, solid fuel fire) is installed.

All new build social housing is built in line with the Building Regulations.
