AQW 43426/22-27 – Road safety and cycle training for children

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Education to detail any recent discussions he has had with the Minister for Infrastructure, regarding ensuring children have access to practical road safety and cycle training.

Minister of Education: The safety of children travelling to school is of the utmost importance. I have engaged directly with the Minister for Infrastructure and the Education Authority (EA) on road safety matters and support the work being taken forward by the Department for Infrastructure to improve road safety for children and young people.

Officials in my Department, together with the EA, are contributing to the Minister for Infrastructure’s Safer Journeys to School Programme, which is considering measures to reduce risks for children travelling to and from school.

The Cycling Proficiency Scheme also sits within the remit of the Minister for Infrastructure, who announced funding for its delivery in schools in March 2025.
