Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Health whether any assessment has been made of the use of Artificial Intelligence models such as Radiomics-based Early Detection Model in early pancreatic cancer detection.
Minister of Health: My Department is aware of emerging research into the use of artificial intelligence (AI) models, including Radiomics-based Early Detection Model (REDMOD), for earlier detection of pancreatic cancer.
A regional AI imaging strategy is currently under consideration and will support the safe and effective use of AI across imaging services, in line with established policy and governance arrangements.
While such technologies show potential, they are not yet sufficiently validated for routine clinical use. At present, no specific assessment has been undertaken in Northern Ireland regarding the use of REDMODs for pancreatic cancer. Any proposals for future AI developments would be considered through established processes, taking account of clinical impact and available resources.
My Department will continue to monitor developments in this area as part of its wider commitment to innovation and improving early cancer detection.
