Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to detail any steps he is taking to support the (i) development; and (ii) use of, innovative technology in farming.
Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs: My Department recognises the important role that innovative technology can play in delivering a productive, sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.
In relation to the development of innovative technology, the Department supports research, development and innovation through a range of programmes and partnerships, including investment in science and evidence under the DAERA Innovation Strategy. It also works with research bodies, industry and education providers to develop technologies and practices that improve productivity, environmental performance and climate resilience.
In relation to the use of innovative technology, the Department is advancing measures under the Sustainable Agriculture Programme to support adoption, including knowledge transfer and innovation initiatives and schemes which encourage farmers to trial and implement new technologies. For example:
The Farming for Sustainability – Innovation Scheme supports farmers through Innovation Visits, Innovation Farms and Innovation Partnerships, including funding for farmer-led collaborative projects launched in May 2026, opportunities to explore new technologies internationally, and a network of demonstration farms to showcase on-farm innovation.
Additional support is provided through wider schemes such as the Horticulture Innovation Driver and Support Pilot Scheme and the Sustainable Farming Investment Scheme, which assist farm businesses to invest in innovative equipment, systems and practices to improve environmental performance and efficiency.
These measures are supported by knowledge transfer programmes delivered by the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), which provide training, advice and support to facilitate the adoption of new technologies and practices.
