Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for the Economy to detail any assessment she has made of the energy requirements, associated with the expansion of (i) Artificial Intelligence; and (ii) data centre infrastructure, over the next five years.
Minister for the Economy: My department recognises that the expansion of artificial intelligence and data centre infrastructure has the potential to increase electricity demand over the coming years. The impact of these developments is considered as part of ongoing electricity system analysis and planning, led by the System Operator for Northern Ireland (SONI).
My officials are working closely with SONI, NIE Networks and the Utility Regulator to ensure that emerging sources of demand, including artificial intelligence and data centre infrastructure, are reflected in system and network planning, supported by ongoing monitoring, engagement and policy development, while maintaining security of supply and supporting decarbonisation objectives.
