Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Justice to detail (i) the number of community sentences that were breached, in each of the last two years; (ii) how they were breached; and (ii) what the outcome of the breach was.
Minister of Justice: In relation to parts (i) and (iii) of the question, information in relation to the number of cases where there was a conviction for a beach of a community-based court order, including on the nature of the main disposal, for cases dealt with in 2024 and 2025, has been provided in the following table.
Main disposals imposed following conviction for breach of a community-based court order, 2024 to 2025
Main disposal 2024 2025
Imprisonment 107 249
Suspended Custodial 376 359
Community sentence 77 72
Monetary Penalty 158 57
Discharge/Other 64 33
Total 782 770
Note:
- Figures relate to initial disposals at courts. Appeals are not included.
- Figures relate to cases where there was a conviction for at least one
offence where there was a beach of a community-based court order.
In relation to part (ii) of the question, this has not been able to be provided, as information on how community sentences were breached would require a manual trawl of court records which would be beyond reasonable cost.
