SDLP Discuss Social and Affordable Housing with Irish Minister

SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone, and party colleague, Nicola Mallon, MLA, have met with the Irish Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Damien English, TD. At the meeting the SDLP delegation discussed the shared problems of addressing shortages of social and affordable housing across the island of Ireland.

Mr McGlone said, “We had a very useful meeting with the Minister for Housing and Urban Development. There are shortages in social and affordable housing across the island of Ireland and we can, and should, share our approaches to trying to address these problems.

“During the meeting we discussed housing and homeless strategy and policies in the south, as well as the policies being followed in the north.

“In the absence of a functioning Executive the Irish Government has a role in helping to inform the policies enacted by the NI Secretary of State.

“Our objective is to ensure that the Irish Government’s knowledge of the problems here, and their efforts at resolving these same problems, are shared with however is responsible for tackling them in the North.

“We will continue to work with both the British and Irish Governments to minimise the impact on society of the continued failure of Sinn Féin and the DUP to return to the Executive.”
