SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster Patsy McGlone led a delegation of Mid Ulster SDLP representatives and party members, following an invitation from the Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl, at the unveiling of a bronze bust of the late John Hume with the Hume family in Leinster House on the anniversary of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. The Trimble family were also warmly welcomed at the event. The Houses of the Oireachtas is commemorating the 25th anniversary of the receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize by unveiling a series of commemorative artworks.
Speaking afterwards, Mr McGlone said, “The unveiling of the bust of John Hume in the Oireachtas is a fitting tribute to a true giant of Irish politics.
“Without his vision of an agreed Ireland, and his efforts to achieve that vision, we would be in a much darker place today.
“While others, rightly, are credited for the part they played, it was John’s dedication to peace and his determination to bring everyone to that destination which set him apart.
“It was an honour to be at the unveiling of the bust of John Hume in Leinster House, together with my fellow SDLP representatives from Mid Ulster in paying tribute to our former leader.
“We take inspiration from him in our continued effort to bring about a New Ireland.”
