Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Justice to detail any steps she is taking to ensure that the independence of the legal profession and judiciary will be maintained, following the implementation of reforms of the legal aid system.
Minister of Justice: As Minister of Justice, I am deeply committed to safeguarding the independence of the judiciary. In progressing reforms to the legal aid system, I have been clear that judicial independence must not be compromised.
As part of the Enabling Access to Justice Reform Programme Delivery Plan, the Department intends to launch a public consultation on a number of reform opportunities relating to the provision of legal services. This consultation will provide a platform for meaningful engagement with stakeholders, including the Lady Chief Justice and members of the Judiciary, to ensure that the proposed reforms are informed by a broad range of perspectives and expertise. The Department is committed to a transparent and collaborative approach, recognising that the success of these reforms depends on the insights and experiences of those who work within and rely on the justice system.
