Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail any work her Department has planned for further enhancement to the A6 road.
Minister for Infrastructure: The A6 Phase 2 Derry to Dungiven scheme is part of the A6 Executive Flagship project and will deliver 5.3km of new high-quality dual-carriageway from the existing terminus of the A6 dual-carriageway at Drumahoe to the A2 at Gransha, and an upgrade of the existing A2 dual-carriageway from Caw to Maydown.
As you will be aware, part of the works for this scheme, between Caw and Drumahoe, will encroach on the illegal waste site at Mobuoy. I formally approved the department’s response to the recent public consultation on the Draft Remediation Strategy which closed on 2 October 2025 however, we must await finalisation of the DAERA strategy and the associated timeline for its implementation. Once this is confirmed my officials can determine the most efficient delivery mechanism for the progression of the scheme.
My Department is also considering the provision of a signalised junction at Dales Corner, Active Travel improvements between Drumahoe and Altnagelvin, the upgrading of the Variable Message Signage at the Foyle Bridge and the removal of the old Park and Ride site at Drumahoe, with expected delivery in 2026/27 alongside the routine monitoring of the road network and resurfacing where required.
Longer term considerations include the construction of a grade separated junction at the A6 /A29 junction near Maghera.
