Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Justice for an update on any steps she has taken towards introducing legislation to prevent the unauthorised recording and sharing of photos of road traffic collisions.
Minister of Justice: Following the Assembly debate on 8 December 2025, Minister Kimmins and I met with families and representatives campaigning for legislation to prevent the unauthorised recording and sharing of photos of road traffic collisions. It was clear that the immense trauma that these families have faced in losing a loved one was further compounded by the circulation of distressing images on social media.
I consider that the upcoming Victims and Witnesses Bill, which I plan to introduce to the Assembly in late Spring, may provide a suitable legislative vehicle for such provision.
Whilst my Department would not have the capacity to consult on these matters, I am content that my officials could support and work with the Committee to enable a Committee amendment, if Members were minded to do so.
