AQW 38484/22-27 – Legislation to prohibit overtaking of school buses

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Infrastructure, pursuant to AQW 35836/22-27, to detail (i) whether legislation to prohibit overtaking of school buses at bus stops will be introduced in this mandate; and (ii) a timetable for the introduction of this legislation.

Minister for Infrastructure: I have established a Safer Journeys to School Programme within the Department to examine options to improve safety for school journeys, including legislative options. This work is evidence-led to ensure interventions are effective and proportionate.

Officials are working at pace to explore a range of practical operational and behavioural interventions. As part of this work, the Programme is examining the feasibility and potential impact of legislative measures, including a possible statutory prohibition on overtaking a stationary school bus. There is no confirmed timetable for legislation at this stage.

The Department remains committed to improving road safety and will continue to engage with stakeholders to deliver the most effective measures.
