Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail the number of potholes or surface defects that have been repaired, in each of the last four years, broken down by constituency or local council area.
Minister for Infrastructure: My Department collects and stores data in a manner which mirrors the boundaries of the district council areas. Road surface defects, including potholes, are managed through the Roads Maintenance Client Management System which records the total number of defects and the number outstanding for each local maintenance office area.
My Department regularly publishes information in relation to reports of potholes which is made available for public view through the OpenDataNI portal at https://www.opendatani.gov.uk/@transportni/pothole-enquiries and can be filtered by defect type and geographical area.
Surface defects information created from routine safety inspections is also available at https://www.opendatani.gov.uk/@transportni/surface-defects. Surface defects are categorised using a range of options, which includes pothole, rutted, depressed, cracked, crazed uneven, edge deterioration etc. A priority setting is based on the severity and risk to the public. Lower priority surface defects may be used for future planning purposes and therefore may not be instructed for repair. The data also includes ad-hoc defects created following a site investigation of a customer reporting pothole.
Information available on the Open data portal relating to data ‘2025 to date’ is refreshed each evening from the live work management system.
