McGlone: Devasting Ulster University Job Losses will have Wider Economic Impact

SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster Patsy McGlone has said that job losses across Ulster University (UU) are devastating for the staff involved and will have an impact on the wider economy. He was speaking after the University confirmed the loss of up to 450 jobs.

The Mid Ulster MLA said it highlighted the funding pressures facing the higher education sector.

Mr McGlone said, “The loss of so many jobs at Ulster University is devastating news and our thoughts are with all the staff affected. This will have come as a real shock to staff, students and the wider public.

“These job cuts will have a significant impact, particularly at a time when many people are already under financial pressure. There will be implications across the wider economy, with the loss of well-paid jobs that support families and local communities.

“This is the direct result of sustained funding pressures across our universities. It is clear that the Economy Minster has been unable to address their concerns.

“For years, there has been a clear ambition to expand Magee and increase student numbers in the North West. That ambition must not be undermined by these job losses.

“We should be investing in skills, growing our economy and encouraging young people to live and work here.

“The SDLP will be urgently seeking a meeting with UU and the Economy Minister to advocate on behalf of staff, and to question the reasons for these decisions.”
