Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Education to detail any steps he is taking to improve access to musical instruments and instruction for all children.
Minister of Education: Access to musical instruments and tuition is delivered through the Education Authority’s Music Service. The EA service provides instrumental and vocal tuition across Northern Ireland in both schools and regional music centres, ensuring wide geographical coverage and clear progression pathways.
Access is supported through affordable tuition and instrument hire, alongside a comprehensive remissions policy. Pupils entitled to Free School Meals receive a 70% reduction on all Music Service fees, significantly reducing financial barriers for disadvantaged families.
In addition, wholeclass and schoolbased programmes enable many pupils to access instrumental learning as part of their normal school experience, often at no cost. EA continues to enhance accessibility through improved registration and billing systems, making it easier for families to engage with available musical opportunities.
