AQW 45460/22-27 – Vehicles blocking pavements

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail any steps she is taking to reduce the number of (i) vehicles blocking pavements; and (ii) unroadworthy vehicles parked for long periods of time in public areas.

Minister for Infrastructure: My officials are taking forward work to develop the necessary legislation to introduce a blanket ban across the North on parking a vehicle wholly on the footway, parking across dropped kerbs and double parking. It is my aim to introduce these changes in the latter part of 2026, subject to the legislative process.

My Department cannot take enforcement action against vehicles parked on a pavement and causing an obstruction where there are no parking restrictions marked on the carriageway; these matters should be reported to PSNI using their non-emergency 101 number.
