Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail any steps her Department is taking to increase information and awareness for members of the public on the accessibility of public spaces.
Minister for Infrastructure: My Department promotes accessibility of public spaces by raising awareness of accessibility arrangements through digital channels and more traditional communication methods, such as, hard-copy materials, alongside ongoing engagement with stakeholders and service users. This includes ensuring that all adopted roads and footways remain safe and accessible, contributing to local initiatives such as age-friendly strategies and continually reviewing and improving accessibility across public service facilities and sites.
My Department also integrates accessibility considerations into infrastructure projects, enhancing public information and signage where works are undertaken, to support safe and inclusive use of shared spaces.
Translink embeds accessibility of public spaces across their network with clear, concise information on facilities and services which is primarily delivered via online platforms.
Accessibility of public spaces is actively promoted by Translink through ongoing communications, awareness initiatives and accessible technology such as Navi Lens. Continual engagement with representative groups ensures that lived experience informs service design and delivery.
When significant service changes are introduced by Translink, practical support and guidance is provided to enable confident and inclusive travel. There is continuous investment in digital tools, accessible journey planning, assistive technologies and communication channels to meet diverse customer needs.
NI Water communicates clear information on accessibility of public spaces (including detail regarding permitted activities) on their social media channels, which is regularly updated, particularly during summer months. Timely information is also shared to enhance public awareness and public safety notices to highlight potential risks for visitors.
