Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister of Education whether any assessment has been made of the potential impact of the use of Artificial Intelligence in schools on safeguarding.
Minister of Education: Guidance on the use of Generative AI was issued to education professionals through DE Circular 2026/02 on 11 May 2026. This guidance is underpinned by four key principles: supporting pupil learning in a digitally safe manner; transforming teaching, learning and assessment; promoting inclusive design for digital learning; and advancing professional development to improve efficiency, effectiveness and ethical practice.
Building on this, I intend to progress a proof‑of‑concept pilot involving up to 2,000 Year 12 and Year 14 pupils. This pilot will evaluate both the impact and feasibility of introducing safe Generative AI tools at pupil level.
In parallel, my officials are working closely with the Department of Health, the Department of Justice, and other partners through the Northern Ireland Executive’s Online Safety Strategy (2022–2027). This collaborative approach aims to raise awareness, support schools and families, and ensure that emerging evidence continues to inform policy and practice.
