AQW 49372/22-27 – Department for Infrastructure staff training on the use of Artificial Intelligence

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail any training that has been provided to staff in her Department on the use of Artificial Intelligence, including its limitations and risks, since February 2024.

Minister for Infrastructure: The NICS Policy on the Use of AI was agreed and published in June 2024. It covers the responsible and ethical use of AI within the NICS.

Within my Department, following a pilot and review in 2025, the Microsoft Copilot AI Assistant was deployed to all staff in December 2025.

At that time, various training materials on the use of the tool, including how to use it responsibly were distributed to all staff through the Department’s Intranet.

This was followed by regular articles posted on the Department’s Intranet, a Department wide webinar which featured the use of AI as one of the main topics and various mandatory online training covering topics such as “Understanding Artificial Intelligence”, “How to keep our sensitive information safe” and “Data Protection Essentials”.
