Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail any steps being taken to improve passenger safety at train stations.
Minister for Infrastructure: Improving the safety of the transport network remains a key priority for my Department, delivered in partnership with Translink and other key stakeholders. Throughout this mandate, significant investment has been made in new and upgraded railway stations that meet modern safety, security and accessibility standards. These improvements have enhanced the overall passenger experience while creating safer environments through better lighting, clearer signage, comprehensive CCTV coverage and upgraded security features, all of which help reduce the likelihood of incidents.
Passenger safety is supported by a robust programme of regulatory oversight. In 2025, my rail safety officials completed an inspection of the platform-train interface, while Translink continues to review risk assessments and operational safety measures across the network. This ongoing work seeks to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, strengthen compliance with safety requirements and ensure that best practice is embedded in both existing operations and future rail projects. Lessons learned from inspections and reviews are also informing the design of new and upgraded stations, ensuring that safety remains at the centre of development plans.
At an operational level, Translink continues to place passenger safety at the heart of its services. A range of measures, including extensive CCTV coverage, regular patrols by station staff, Revenue Protection Officers, private security personnel and the Safe Transport Team (PSNI Officers), help provide a visible and reassuring presence across the network. Staff are trained in safeguarding, customer safety, incident management and emergency response procedures, while public awareness initiatives encourage responsible behaviour and the reporting of any concerns.
My Department will continue to work closely with Translink and delivery partners to maintain a safe, secure and welcoming rail network, supported by ongoing investment in measures that further enhance passenger safety and confidence in public transport.
