Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the Minister for Communities to detail any steps his Department is taking to help increase participation of women and girls in sport.
Minister for Communities: Increasing participation of women and girls in sport is a priority for my Department as set out in ‘Active Living’ the Sport and Physical Activity Strategy for Northern Ireland. The Strategy has a dedicated focus on promoting participation, inclusion and community engagement, with actions designed to ensure sport and physical activity are inclusive, safe and accessible. This includes targeted efforts to address barriers faced by under-represented groups, including women and girls, and to support equality of opportunity to participate for all.
As this issue is also an operational matter for Sport NI, I have sought the requested information from the Chief Executive, who has provided me with a response.
Due to the volume of information to be provided I have arranged for the detail to be placed in the Assembly Library.
