AQW 44967/22-27 – FMdFM Use of Artificial Intelligence

Mr Patsy McGlone (Mid Ulster): To ask the First Minister and deputy First Minister whether their Department has used Artificial Intelligence to assist with drafting (i) legislation; and (ii) policy, in the last 12 months.

First Minister and deputy First Minister: In the last 12 months, the Department has made appropriate use of approved Artificial Intelligence tools to support productivity. These tools have been used to enhance the efficiency of drafting and refining briefing materials, streamlining routine word processing tasks, and assisting with research.

This approach is consistent with the draft AI Strategy, which makes it clear that AI is intended to support and augment human decision-making, rather than replace it. Policy development and legislative drafting remain firmly the responsibility of civil servants. AI tools are not used to replace professional judgement and any outputs generated are reviewed, refined and finalised by officials through established governance processes and ethical principles.
