McGlone Welcomes Launch of NIFHA Creating Sustainable Communities Report

SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster Patsy McGlone attended the launch of the “Creating Sustainable Communities” report at the Assembly this week.

“Creating Sustainable Communities” is a NI Federation of Housing Associations research report on social housing in the North.

Speaking afterwards, Mr McGlone said, “Providing a roof over our heads is one of the most important things in life.

“Figures from last year show that over 49,000 people were on the Housing Executive’s waiting list for housing, with around 1,400 in Mid Ulster, and a significant percentage of those had been waiting for over 5 years for a home.

“At the start of this year there were 62,000 people officially homeless across the North, including over 1,600 people in Mid Ulster.

“The Housing Executive, Housing Associations, Department for Communities, Department for Infrastructure and our District Councils all have an extremely important role to play.

“However, from my own constituency experience, much, much more has to be done, particularly by the Executive, to provide affordable, comfortable, warm homes for our community.”
